Creative Director Jen Azoulay On Investment Dressing, Life in LA and Her Love of Vintage Fashion

The Jen Wonders Studio founder talks personal style, turning 40, and more.

A true multi-hyphenate with many years in the fashion industry, creative director Jen Azoulay knows a thing or several when it comes to style.

Previously the visual merchandising director for a luxury maison and a stylist for ELLE in her native France, these days, the Paris-born-LA-based tastemaker explores her love of vintage and sustainable fashion through Jen Wonders Studio: a unique digital boutique where she redesigns and upcycles pre-loved pieces to make them one-of-a-kind.

To learn more about her career, life in Los Angeles and approach to creativity, The Aje Report caught up with Jen in New York City, where she styled and stepped out in the newest arrivals from Resort 23 ‘Sculptura’.

Below, keep reading for our conversation with the Aje Insider, Jen Azoulay.

The Aje Report: You’ve had an accomplished career in fashion, how would you describe your career journey and how it’s led you to where you are today?

Jen: I would say that my career in fashion has been eclectic. I have done so many different things, from fashion editor to visual merchandiser, content creator and designer. Every part of the journey has brought me to where I am today. All experiences bring knowledge and can only add to the next chapter of my life.

You styled Aje’s ‘Sculptura’ collection on the streets of New Yorkcan you share with us your perfect day in NYC? Do you have any rituals when visiting the city?

I usually come to New York for fashion weeks, so it’s always very hectic. I love to walk around the city and look at people in the streets, [as] they inspire me. [Also] seeing the shows, feeling the NY atmosphere and finishing the day in one of my many favourite restaurants.

Living in LA, where are your favourite places to eat, see and play?

I love to go for a hike in the hills of Calabasas and enjoy a nice lunch at Crossroad kitchen. [Also] driving on the PCH overlooking the ocean, and finishing the day at Marvin for the perfect dinner.

‘Sculptura’ was inspired by the interplay of form and space, curated through a desire to both co-exist and create with nature. Do you find that LA’s outdoor lifestyle has informed your approach to style and creativity?

Yes, definitely. I am so inspired by the light in Los Angeles, which is magical. The mountains meeting the ocean and nature surrounding me is the most important part of my well-being.

Are you drawn to different aesthetics based on where you are living? How does your style evolve between Paris and LA?

In Paris, I wear less colour. The weather and city draw me toward more neutrals. [It’s] the perfect opportunity to wear beautiful coats as it's cooler. I find myself dressing more casually in Los Angeles, as the lifestyle is more laid-back.

Where did your passion for vintage clothing stem from, and what sparked the initial idea to start Jen Wonders Studio?

I started going to the flea markets in Los Angeles 20 years ago. I always loved finding gems and having something unique to wear. Jen Wonders Studio came from the need to recycle all the clothes that were already produced and reuse them in a unique way.

What are your personal considerations for investing in fashion consciously and thoughtfully?

I buy less, but better. I invest in well-made pieces that I will keep for years.

Which pieces from Aje’s ‘Sculptura’ collection are you most drawn to? Where do you see yourself wearing these?

I love the black Arp Cut Out Knit Midi Dress. It’s the perfect piece to wear from day to night. I paired it with the organza trench, which is light yet versatile and easy to wear for every occasion.

How would you describe your personal style currently?

I just turned 40, [and] I am drawn to a more feminine look—more elegant. I really want to celebrate the woman I’ve become, and my style needs to show that.

What are you looking forward to this coming year?

I am looking forward to renovating my new house and travelling to new places this year.
