Mother's Day

A day like no other, this Mother's Day Aje is celebrating Mothers of Substance and Style.

Paying homage to the mothers and grandmothers who have come before us, paving the way for the daughters and sons of today, we catch up with friends of Aje, Rachelle Rowlings and Jess Pecoraro, on the lessons their mums have taught them, and the style secrets they cherish to this day.

We know this year Mother’s Day will be different and, in many cases, distanced. Whilst nothing can replace the feeling of being together, we will be holding our mothers closely in our hearts as we celebrate the wonderful women of our lives.

We will be profiling Mothers of Substance and Style in the coming weeks. If you are a Mother of Style, or have one yourself, share your nearest and dearest images with us on Instagram using the hashtag #AjeMothersOfStyle.

Mother's Day is on Sunday the 10th of May.

How are you staying connected this Mother’s day this year, given the current circumstances in the world?

I speak daily with my loved ones via phone calls or FaceTime. Social media of course is a brilliant way to stay connected with friends and also to offer some inspiration when you’re feeling flat!

What has been the best lesson your Mum has offered to you?

It’s hard to choose one! And it’s taken me a long time to embrace her wisdom! The best lesson from her through her own battles and loss is to appreciate every single day.

What teaching can you impart, based on your experiences as a mother of two little ones so close in age?

That you can’t control the chaos. It comes with the territory! And instead of looking at it as unmanageable, look at it as just another stage that will be a distant memory one day. And you’ll crave that beautiful chaos!

What makes the word ‘mum' so special?

Universally, it’s one of the first words uttered by a child. It’s followed by I love you or I need your help or I need help. And it reminds you that you are their whole world.

My mum still has a few Carla Zampatti dresses from the 80’s. The shoulder pads and the electric colours! I used to dress up in them when I was little. My mum had such an eccentric style and I’ll always thank her for introducing me to that from such early on.

How are you staying connected this Mother’s day this year, given the current circumstances in the world?

We are so fortunate to have technology to keep us connected. I’ll be spending the day at home with Harley and FaceTiming my mum, mother in law and her grandmothers.

What has been the best lesson your Mum has offered to you?

My mum always taught us to work hard, to never doubt ourselves and to be your own person which is something I will hope to pass onto Harley.

What teaching can you impart, based on your experiences as a mother?

Patience is definitely keen and also just has precious time really is.

What makes the word ‘mum' so special?

It’s such a surreal feeling becoming a mum and it’s something you can’t describe. The love you have for your child is like no other.

Tell us your most memorable fashion moment — mother or grandmother.

My mum was a designer in Italy so I grew up in her studio with her team. I have videos of me age 4 walking around her showroom going through her collection and explaining how to style each piece all in Italian, it’s quite funny to think that I’m now a stylist.
